Cleveland Indians - Professional Baseball Leaders from Cleveland
Cleveland is one of the US cities, known for its long association with professional baseball. The city's professional baseball team, called the Cleveland Indians, has managed to make the native basketball enthusiasts feel proud with its performance over a century. A member of the Central Division of Major League Baseball's American League, the Cleveland Indians adopted the name for the sake of a different recognition.
A Little Background
The city of Cleveland was among those who were greatly inspired by the formation of the Cincinnati Red Stockings in 1869. Forest Citys was the name given to the professional baseball club, soon established in the city. After a great struggle, the team gained recognition and a new name of the Cleveland Lake Shores by the year 1900. It was in 1901 that the American League was established and the Cleveland team, under the name of the Cleveland Bluebirds, became one of its eight charter franchises. The name of the team was the Cleveland Bronchos in 1902 and the Cleveland Naps from 1903 to 1914. Finally, the present day name of the Cleveland Indians was chosen in 1915.
World Series Titles
The Cleveland Indians have two World Series titles to its credit. In 1920, the team defeated the Brooklyn Robins to win the title. The second World Series title was won by the team in 1948 against the Boston Braves. There are 5 American League pennants and 7 Central Division titles to the credit of the Cleveland Indians. The period between 1960 and 1993 is called the slump period for the team, with no significant win to its credit. However, the things changed after this and the new blood of the team started performing well. Famously, the Cleveland Indians tickets were sold within ten minutes in the year 1996.
Hall of Fame
The Cleveland Indians hall of fame includes names like Earl Averill, Bob Feller, Gaylord Perry, Dick Williams, Frank Robinson, Phil Niekro, Joe Gordon, Ralph Kiner, Dave Winfield and Sam Rice.
Some Additional Indians Facts
The League Park and the Cleveland Stadium were the home ballparks of the Cleveland Indians in the past. At present, the team plays home games at the Progressive Field. The popular nicknames for the team are 'the Tribe' and 'the Wahoos'. Chief Wahoo is the name of the mascot of the team, also adopted in the team's logo.
Cleveland Indians tickets are still purchased in large number by the team's followers. So, if you plan to view their performance live this season, don't delay to book your tickets in advance.
